What Happened to Brendan Hughes?
In Say Nothing, FX's new show about the Troubles based on Patrick Radden Keefe's book of the same name, Brendan Hughes (portrayed by Anthony Boyle in his younger years and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor in his older ones) plays a key role in the story.
The real Brendan Hughes died in 2008 at age 59.
He had been hospitalized due to a chest infection, and fell into a coma. Hughes had led the 1980 Irish hunger strike in HM Prison Maze, and according to an obituary, “Hughes's health was badly damaged by the hunger strike and he suffered from heart and eye problems, and arthritis: he died in hospital.”
