        6. He entered the U.S. Air Force Academy in June 1976, and graduated with a commission as a 2d Lt on May 28, 1980, remaining at the Academy as assistant football coach from July 1980 to June 1981. His next assignment was as a research biologist at Brooks AFB, Texas, from June 1981 to July 1982, followed by medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, from July 1982 to June 1986.

          Capt Cornum interned at Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews AFB, Maryland, from July 1986 to June 1987, and then served as a Flight Surgeon with the 20th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Florida, from September 1987 to July 1988.

          His next assignment was as a Flight Surgeon with the 58th Fighter Squadron and Surgeon with the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin AFB, Florida, from July 1988 to July 1993. During this time, Maj Cornum deployed with the 33rd Fighter Wing to Saudi Arabia in support of Operations Desert Shield and
